People who are interested in doing something will do it when it’s convenient. People who are committed will do it no matter what.

You all know the story about hard work and dedication and how it gets you far. But for me the hardest thing was always just to turn up. So what’s the best way to train your brain to get off the couch and practice some basic dance steps? Here I want to share with you my method of how I push myself to do something especially practice my basic dance steps at home.

Basically when you’re excited, you will do something. Your focus is in 6th gear and no matter what distractions are thrown your way, you will keep going. That’s all fine. But after practicing basic in Waltz or Samba for the past week every single day, you’re not gonna be as excited about it, as you were when the steps were brand new. Right? And it’s perfectly normal! Repetition is not sexy but it works though!

When you chat with your friend, have you ever said: Oh when I’m at the gym it’s all fine, it’s just getting there is hard. I’ve been there many times 🙂 So what you can do to fire up your brain when you feel lazy, you can condition it! What do I mean by that? Simply, when you’re about to do something, but are hesitant. Just count 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, GO! Just like a formula 1 would start, in the same way you’d set off too.

When you are at home and struggle to put your shoes, put on a “rocket launch” voice and countdown. When you repeat that process and make it a part of your dance training to do anything, you will literally become a lot more efficient. I tried it in every aspect of my life. My students tried it and it does work! That’s how you condition your brain by adding this incredibly simple trick. Now it’s your turn!

5, 4, 3, 2, 1, GO!

PS. It’s not rocket science 😉

BTW, also another way to get your home dance practice done and impress your coach, is to get your buddy to commit with you. It’s awesome to have a technique online buddy. Last time I wrote a post on online dance lessons, check it out HERE.
